INTRODUCTION TO SALTA

Day 1 - Salta | Cafayate
Arrival in Salta. You are met at the airport with an immediate transfer to Cafayate with visits on route. Leaving Salta you will start traveling along the fertile Lerma Valley thorugh National Road N°68, an important tobacco growing area. Then you will take a winding road along the banks of Las Conchas river and will start finding strange shapes made of brightly coloured sandstone deposited in the Tertiary Period, about 60 million years ago. Garganta del Diablo and the Anfiteatro, huge open cracks in the earth, are amazing.

Gradually the arid countryside will be replaced by extensive vineyards, indicating that Cafayate is near.

This town has become the most important site in the Calchaquí Valleys. Located at 1,660 metres above sea level it is well known because of its famous torrontes wine, product of the exquisite combination of temperature and humidity that provides the ideal environment for the growth of this sweet and deep fruit flavour vine, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah and Chardonnay.

Day 2 - Cafayate | Cachi
Today you will be picked up to go northwards through NR 40 to Cachi. You will travel along the surprising landscapes of Quebrada de las Flechas. On the way, you can visit the small towns of Molinos and Seclantás.

Set between the Cachi and Calchaquí rivers, Cachi is a pleasant village, founded in 1673 as a Spanish outpost, retains in its narrow cobbled streets the ancient church, with mud brick walls and roof made of cactus. The old chapel and the Archaeology Museum, one of the best of its kind in Argentina, can be visited.

Day 03 | Cachi - National Park Los Cardones - Cuesta del Obispo - Salta
Today you will be picked up for the transfer to Salta. Leaving Cachi, you will travel northwards through NR 40 until Payogasta (10 km). Then you will go through Provincial Route 33. At both sides of the road tall and elegant cactus will start to appear, indicating the proximity of Los Cardones National Park, which will be seen while traveling through Recta de Tin Tin, an old Inca highway. Begin an ascent along a winding road until reaching the heights of Piedra del Molino.

After reaching this point, the road starts to descend through the imposing Cuesta del Obispo and Quebrada de Escoipe, also called the "three-colored" gorge, because of its red earth and green hills in contrast with the blue sky.

Continuing past El Carril, approx. 111 km, you will go northwards taking NR 68 for 36 km. The tobacco plantations of the Lerma Valley start to appear, until reaching Salta city.

Day 04 | Salta
This morning, enjoy a city tour of Salta, one of the oldest cities in Argentina that was founded by the Spaniards. The main highlights are the Cabildo (Town Hall), the Archbishop’s Palace and Cathedral, the main square (9 de Julio), San Francisco’s church and San Bernardo’s church and convent.

You have the option to take the cable car to the top of San Bernardo Hill in a cable car. A few kilometers away, set amidst green mountains and streams, you will come across San Lorenzo, a summer resort with old trees, flowering gardens, and magnificent mansions, surrounded by gentle hills which are ideal for walks, picnics and horse-riding.
At the end of the tour, a visit to the Craft Market (ancient flour mill) offers the chance to appreciate authentic samples of the native artisans work. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport to board your flight.
